The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), in collaboration with the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) and its stakeholders from seven advisory clusters of the sustainable ecosystem, today unveiled its key outcomes and learnings from Malaysia’s participation at the UNFCCC-COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan from 11 November to 22 November 2024.
This debrief session concluded Malaysia’s COP29 efforts and strengthened the country’s commitment to achieving net zero by 2050 and enhancing efforts on climate resilience. At COP29 in Baku, several critical advancements were made to facilitate efforts to address climate change. Among others, a new global climate finance target was set, requiring developed countries to provide USD300 billion annually until 2035. Important decisions were also finalised on global adaptation targets and the operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund, which will offer much-needed support to vulnerable nations. In addition, agreements have been made for Article 6, enabling the global compliance-based carbon market to function effectively.
The Malaysia Pavilion hosted 46 sessions for two weeks, showcasing 188 speakers from various sectors, including government, private industry, research institutions, civil society, indigenous communities, and independent organisations. The events attracted 1,622 attendees in person and engaged over 10,000 online viewers through live social media broadcasts.
Furthermore, three strategic collaborations were established to promote sustainability initiatives, enhance cross-sector partnerships, and drive meaningful climate action on both local and global scales. Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said, “More than just a venue, the Pavilion demonstrated Malaysia’s proactive, whole-of-nation approach to tackling climate change. The call for urgent climate action is louder than ever. Malaysia must sustain the momentum gained at COP29 to achieve meaningful progress towards COP30 in Belem, Brazil and beyond.”
Malaysia’s First Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1) to UNFCCC Malaysia also submitted its First Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1) on 31 December 2024 as part of its international commitment. The BTR1 entails the national GHG inventory for all main economic sectors, Malaysia’s efforts on climate change mitigation actions, and items about financial support, technology transfer, and capacity building.
The National GHG Centre (MyGHG) prepared the national document with the utmost support from the working groups and stakeholders. Malaysia was among the 85 of 198 countries that successfully met their commitments under the Paris Agreement, submitting the BTR1 to the UNFCCC within the targeted time. The national document reflects Malaysia’s commitment to achieve its nationally determined contribution (NDC) target of a 45% reduction in economy-wide GHG emission intensity by 2030. In the long term, Malaysia aspires to achieve the net-zero target in 2050. Road to COP30, The First COP in The Amazon Malaysia anticipates COP30, which will take place in Belem, Brazil, from 10 to 21 November 2025.
